Workers are racing time, piling sandbags along the swollen North Platte River in Carbon County as they rush to prepare for a crest expected to approach record levels this weekend, with the river gauge at 10.1 feet, almost 2 feet above flood stage.
Volunteer workers including nearly 70 University of Wyoming employees and student athletes are joining forces with more than 150 Wyoming National Guard troops to try to stop the rising floodwaters from spreading any further beyond its banks. UW Associated Vice President for Operations Mark Collins says the UW contingent will fill sandbags and perform other duties. The last time UW volunteers assisted with flood relief efforts was in 2010 on the Laramie River on Laramie’s west side.
