The Wyoming Cowboy golf team recorded its best finish of the 2021 season on Tuesday when it tied for 10th out of 23 teams at its own Wyoming Cowboy Classic held at Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Ariz. Leading the way for the Pokes was sophomore Tyler Severin, who finished in 11th place, marking his third Top 15 finish of the season.
The Wyoming lineup featured a balanced attack. Severin fired a three-round total of 210 (-6). He was followed by junior Bryce Waters, who was six strokes back of Severin at 216 (Even) to tie for 33rd. Sophomore Jared Edeen finished one stroke back of Waters at 217 (+1) and tied for 39th. Wyoming’s fourth team member was senior Dan Starzinski, who came in one stroke back of Edeen at 218 (+2) to tie for 48th place. Junior Carl Underwood rounded out the Cowboy team, shooting a 54-hole score of 231 (+15) to place 106th. Cowboy sophomore Kirby Coe-Kirham, playing as an individual, finished with a 225 (+9) and tied for 86th.
The Cowboys tied for 10th with Mountain West Conference foe Utah State at 861 (-3). Wyoming finished one stroke ahead of Mountain West opponent UNLV. The Rebels shot an 862 (-2). UW also finished ahead of Air Force, which finished in 23rd place at 917 (+53)
San Diego State posted a final 54-hole total of 831 (-33) to win the team title by six strokes over TCU. The Aztecs set a new Cowboy Classic tournament record for lowest team score, breaking the previous record held by McNeese State, which shot an 838 (-26) at Whirlwind in 2015. Stanford’s Barclay Brown captured the individual medalist honors, shooting a 202 (-14), which also set a new Cowboy Classic record. That record was previously held by Cole Madey of UCLA and John Murdock of Wyoming, who both shot 203 (-13) in the 2019 Cowboy Classic. Brown won by two strokes over three individuals who shot 204 (-12) for the tournament.
“I was pleased with the way the guys competed this week,” said UW Director of Golf and head men’s golf coach Joe Jensen. “We beat a couple conference opponents and beat some other good teams. We didn’t finish as strong as I would have liked in the final round, but the guys really played hard and I’m proud of them for their performance. We had some good balance between our top four players. We’re still trying to solidify our fifth spot.
“Tyler (Severin) had another good tournament. He is a good competitor and has a lot of confidence in his game right now.”
The second round of the tournament was stopped Monday night due to darkness. Teams completed their second rounds on Tuesday morning before teeing off the third and final round immediately following that.
Wyoming hosted its 18th Cowboy Classic at the Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Ariz. The course measured 7,334 yards and played to a par of 72.
The Cowboys will return to play on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18 at the Nebraska Git-R-Done Husker Invite in Lincoln, Neb.
