WY Cowboys In Contention Again, In 4th At Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Entering Final Round

Laramie, Wyo. (Oct. 7, 2019) —  The Wyoming Cowboys are in contention again for a tournament title, as they will enter Tuesday’s final round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in fourth place, only six strokes out of the lead.  Wyoming juniors Carl Underwood and Bryce Underwood led the way for the Cowboys in Monday’s first two rounds.  Waters fired a six-under par 66 in the opening round, and Underwood matched that 66 in the afternoon’s second round.  Underwood shot under par in both rounds on Tuesday, posting a one-under par 71 to start the tournament, and he is tied for sixth after the first 36 holes at 137 (-7).  Waters is tied for 12th at 140 (-4).

Host Colorado leads the tournament at 556 (-20).  Utah State is in second place — four strokes back at 560 (-6).  Grand Canyon holds down the third spot — five strokes back at 561 (-15).  Wyoming is six strokes back of CU at 562 (-14).  The individual leader is Witchayapat Sinsrang of Omaha, who leads by one stroke at 133 (-11) over Jack Dyer of Cal State Fullerton and Michael Salazar of Grand Canyon, who both shot 134 (-10).

Also scoring well for the Cowboys on Monday were sophomores Kirby Coe-Kirkham and Tyler Severin who both finished the first 36 holes under par.  Coe-Kirkahm is tied for 19th at 142 (-2) and Severin is tied for 22nd at 143 (-1).  Senior Dan Starzinski shot a 152 (+8) and is tied for 63rd.  Wyoming has two players competing at individuals.  Redshirt freshman Liam Clancy is in 59th place at 150 (+6), and sophomore Jared Edeen is tied for 67th at 154 (+10).

“Our goal with both of this week’s tournaments was to put ourselves in contention on the final day, and we’ve done that,” said Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and Head Coach.  “We lost some opportunities toward  the end of Monday’s final round, giving up a couple strokes, but we’re in that top group and have a chance to move up tomorrow.

“Carl (Underwood) is playing well.  He needs to go out with the same competitive edge tomorrow.  I just want the guys to go out and play loose tomorrow like they did today and see us finish up on a strong note.”

The Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with a final 18-hole round at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.  Colorado National measures 7,676 yards and plays to a Par 72.
