TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 7, 2019) – The doubles team of Mihaela Kaftanova and Ida Krause picked up a consolation round victory at the ITA All-Americas Monday in Tulsa, Okla., as they defeated East Carolina’s Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer, 8-4
The duo, who are playing together for the first time in 2019, opened with a loss in the qualifying draw to the University of Pennsylvania’s Iuliia Bryzgalova and Marija Cunic.
“I thought we got started slowly in our first match today, which put us in a hole we couldn’t get out of,” said head coach Dean Clower.
“In our second match we started out playing our style and then finished that way.”
Kaftanova and Krause will continue doubles consolation play Tuesday morning and will need to win three more matches to advance to the main draw.
Maria Oreshkina also played at the ITA’s this week as she played in the singles portion of the event Sunday. Oreshkina was defeated by Miami (Ohio)’s Brindtha Ramasamy, 6-2 and 7-5. Oreshkina was unable to play in her consolation bracket as the consolation play was cancelled due to weather in Tulsa.
“This has been a great learning experience for the girls,” said Clower.
“To be able to play against the top players in the country is very beneficial and I felt like we showed that we belong.”
