Laramie, Wyo. (Oct. 6, 2019) — Another strong team effort by the Wyoming Cowboy golf team earned the Pokes a third-place finish at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate on Sunday in Highlands Ranch, Colo. It is the third top five tournament finish of the 2019 fall season for the Cowboys. UW finished the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at 850 (-2). The Cowboys had four individuals place in the top 20 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, led by sophomore Kirby Coe-Kirkham, who tied for seventh with a three-round total of 208 (-5).
In addition to Coe-Kirkham’s seventh-place finish, sophomore Tyler Severin and junior Carl Underwood tied for 13th place at 214 (+1) and senior Dan Starzinski tied for 19th at 217 (+4) to give the Cowboys four individuals in the top 20. Junior Bryce Waters tied for 27th at 220 (+7) to complete Wyoming’s scoring for the tournament. Wyoming’s Liam Clancy and Jared Edeen also competed as individuals at the Moore Intercollegiate. Host Denver won the team title at this year’s Ron Moore Intercollegiate at 846 (-6) four strokes ahead of the Cowboys. North Dakota State finished second at 849 (-3) just one stroke ahead of Wyoming. The individual medalist honors were shared by Jackson Solem of Denver and Jack Castiglia of Northern Colorado, who both fired 54-hole totals of 204 (-9).
The third-place showing at the Ron Moore Invitational for the Cowboys combined with a second-place finish at the Ram Masters Invitational and a fifth-place finish at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational gives Wyoming its third top-five tournament placing in four fall tournaments this year.
“The guys played really hard these last three days. We just needed a few more putts to fall today,” said Joe Jensen, University of Wyoming Director of Golf and Head Men’s Golf Coach. “We played solid, but no one really got on a roll today. We’ve been in contention in three of our four fall tournaments, and I feel good about the three strong finishes we’ve had.
“If we take the process that we had this week and can repeat that the rest of the year, we will have some really good days. I’m excited to see what we can do the next two days at CU’s tournament.”
For Coe-Kirkam it marked his second top 10 finish and third top 20 finish of the season. It was Starzinski’s third top 20 finish of the fall. Underwood recorded his second top 20 finish this season, and Severin notched his first top 20 showing this fall.
The Ron Moore Intercollegiate was played on the University of Denver Golf Club in Highlands Ranch, Colo. The course measured 7,285 yards and played to a Par of 71.
Wyoming will continue its fall schedule in the state of Colorado tomorrow, when they tee off at 8:15 a.m. at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational being hosted by the University of Colorado at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. The tournament will begin with two 18-hole rounds being played on Monday, Oct. 7 and will conclude with a final round on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Colorado National measures 7,676 yards and plays to a Par 72.
