Cowgirl Volleyball Travels To Creighton For Final Non-Conference Tournament

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 18, 2019) – The Wyoming volleyball squad looks to get back on the winning tract this weekend as the Cowgirls travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Creighton Classic. Wyoming will face Wichita State Friday at 1 p.m., and will face the 15th-ranked Creighton Bluejays at Noon Saturday.

Wyoming (4-5) lost all three matches last weekend at the South Dakota Classic, losing in four sets to both Iowa and host-South Dakota before falling five sets to UC Davis. Jackie McBride was named to the all-classic team at USD. McBride tallied 26 kills for the weekend and averaged 1.08 blocks per set. Madi Fields was solid in the back row for the Pokes, averaging 4.6 digs per set in the three matches.

Fields, who is second on the program’s career digs list with 1,357, is now just 327 shy of surpassing Becky Stewart for the most in program history. With 20 regular season matches remaining, Fields would need to average 16.35 digs per match to obtain that mark. So far in 2019, Fields is averaging nearly 16.9 digs per match.

Wichita State went 0-3 at home last weekend at the Shocker Volleyball Classic, however, two of those losses came against No. 13 BYU and third-ranked Texas. The Shockers are 3-1 this season in neutral site matches. WSU has a balanced offensive attack and is led by Megan Taffinger’s 88 kills. Sina Uluave and Nicole Anderson have 73 and 70 kills, respectively on the season. McKayla Wuensch leads the Shockers with 142 assists and nine service aces in 2019. This will be the first time this century that the Pokes will face Wichita State, having last met the Shockers in 1999.

No. 15 Creighton splits this past weekend in their home Bluejay Invitational. The Bluejays swept Omaha and lost in four to No. 12 Washington. Creighton is 2-3 this season against ranked opponents. The duo of Keeley Davis and Erica Kostelac lead the Bluejays with 83 and 81 kills, respectively. Setter Madelyn Cole is averaging 10.48 assists per set while in the back row, Brittany Witt is averaging a very impressive 4.97 digs per set. Wyoming last faced Creighton back in 2003.

This will be the final non-conference tournament of the season for the Cowgirls as they begin Mountain West play next week. Wyoming will host its conference opener Sept. 26 as UNLV comes to Laramie for a 6:30 p.m., match. The Pokes will close its first week of conference play at New Mexico Sept. 28.
