LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 11, 2019) – After a 3-0 weekend at home in the UniWyo Invitational, the Wyoming volleyball team travels to the Rushmore State for the South Dakota Classic Friday and Saturday. It will be the Cowgirls’ second-to-last non-conference tournament of 2019 before beginning conference play.
Wyoming faces Iowa at 9 a.m., and host-South Dakota at 6 p.m., Friday before closing the classic Saturday at 9:30 a.m., against UC Davis.
Last weekend, the Cowgirls (4-2) picked up a pair of sweeps over Buffalo and College of Charleston before ending the tournament with a come-from-behind, five-set victory over Northern Colorado Saturday night. Mackenzie Coates, Jackie McBride and KC McMahon were named to the all-tournament team with McBride earning MVP honors.
Coates paced an offense that hit .277 in the three matches and averaged 10.73 assists per set while also tallying a career-high 56 assists in the win over Northern Colorado. McMahon meanwhile led the Pokes with 38 kills and 3.45 per set while hitting .272. McBride had 29 kills and hit .368 while being a menace defensively at the net, averaging 1.55 blocks per set, including nine in the win over College of Charleston.
With the two wins Friday, head coach Chad Callihan became the program’s all-time leader in wins, surpassing former Cowgirl coach Mike English. Callihan now has 126 wins since arriving at Wyoming and also has a program-best .649 winning percentage.
Iowa (3-2) enters the weekend having lost both matches last weekend against No. 19 Colorado and 12th-ranked Washington. The Hawkeyes are hitting .290 as a team in 2019 and are led offensively by Meghan Buzzerio’s 4.47 kills per set (76) and .345 hitting percentage. Gabrielle Orr is averaging 10.12 assists per set while libero Halle Johnston is averaging 4.65 digs a set. This will be the second meeting all-time with Iowa, the Cowgirls lost to the Hawkeyes in four sets last season.
South Dakota enters with a 6-1 record in 2019 with its only loss coming at Iowa State. The Coyotes are hitting .261 and holding opponents to just a .153 clip. Elizabeth Juhnke leads the team with 96 kills while Sami Slaughter is second on the squad with 77 and is averaging a team-high 4.81 kills per set. Defensively, USD has four players averaging more than three digs per set. The Cowgirls are 3-0 all-time against South Dakota and last met the Coyotes back in 2017.
UC Davis went 1-2 this past weekend and is 5-2 overall this season. Mahalia White leads the Aggies with 74 kills while Lauren Matias and Demari Webb have 69 and 61 kills, respectively. Setter Jane Seslar is averaging 10.41 assists per set. The Pokes have won both previous meetings with UC Davis, having last met the Aggies in 2014.
