Laramie’s only Roller Derby team, the Naughty Pines Derby Dames is celebrating ten years of rolling in 2019. Wanting to spread the wealth of roller derby action, the Naughty Pines helped facilitate a meeting between teams from too far away to otherwise have met on the track.
The Bittersweet Bombshells from Rock Springs, Wyo, and Flat Rock Roller Derby from North Platte, Neb travelled to Laramie for an all-day triple-header at the Laramie Ice and Event Center, featuring three games and each of the teams getting to play each other.
Kicking off the day, The Bombshells took on the Pines and the pines walked away with a victory and a final score of 69 – 180. Immediately afterwards, the Naughty Pines played against Flat Rock Roller Derby and a similar outcome was had with a final score of 104 to 228.
The big finale however was the meeting of the two teams meeting in the middle in Laramie. Flat Rock vs. Bombshells was such an electrifying game, with four lead changes and the outcome of the game undetermined until the very end. Finally, The Bombshells from Rock Springs pulled out ahead and finished the game with a final score of 116- 143.
“This weekend was all about bringing two teams together that – for reasons of proximity – would probably have not ever been able to meet,” said Head Coach of NPDD, CJ Stewarts. “So, although we did throw up two W’s on the scoreboard, the real win was doing our part to perpetuate derby’s global community.”
The Naughty Pines Derby Dames were the first team in the state of Wyoming to form in 2009 and are celebrating ten years of hard-hitting action with special home games all year to honor previous and current skaters for their contributions to the sport, and Laramie independent sports as a whole.
Next up, the Pines will be at home again on May 25th in a WFTDA sanctioned game against the Portneuf Valley Bruisers from Pocatello, Ida. The game will be held at 7 pm at the Ice and Event Center in Laramie.
