Jerayah Davis Named Women’s Outstanding Performer as the Mountain West Outdoor Championships Conclude

CLOVIS, Calif. (May 11, 2019) – Cowgirl senior Jerayah Davis scored 27 points over four events this weekend, the most among all athletes, as she became the first Cowgirl to be named the Women’s Outstanding Performer at the Mountain West Championships.

“Jerayah had an amazing competition, winning two individual titles and scoring 27 team points,” said UW head coach Bryan Berryhill. “It was one of the most impressive two-day efforts I’ve ever seen at a conference championship. She is very deserving of being named Athlete of the Meet, and I’m excited to see how she does in two weeks at the NCAA preliminaries.”

Overall, the Cowboys finished sixth overall with 76 points, while the Cowgirls finished tied for seventh with 64 points. For the Cowgirls, it was an improvement of four spots from last season.

“We had some really good performances over the past few days from our seniors and underclassmen,” Berryhill said. “I’m proud of this senior class and the leadership they have provided.”

Davis continued her impressive weekend with a 100-meter dash title, outclassing the field with a time of 11.35 seconds to score 10 team points. This was after she won the long jump on Friday. Davis also took fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.57, which is a personal best and moved her to No. 3 on the all-time Cowgirl list. Then, Davis ran the first leg of the women’s 4x100m relay that took second with a time of 44.86. Also on that team, Ja’la Henderson, Shayla Howell and Jordan Edmonds helped give the Cowgirls eight more team points.

Henderson herself won a Mountain West title, as she defended her triple jump crown with a leap of 42 feet, 7.5 inches. She was the only athlete to clear 42 feet, and she did that on all of her jumps that counted. She is the first Cowgirl since 2004-05 to win an event at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in back-to-back seasons. Amanda Hopper and Jessica Fox were on 4x400m relay teams that won titles two years in a row.

“Ja’la had a great meet and won another conference championship,” Berryhill said. “She has been an amazing competitor during her career, and I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish the rest of the season.”

For the Cowboys, William Nolan took second in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 49-10.5. That mark is No. 8 on the all-time Cowboy list. Reece Shannon also PR’d in the event and earned four points with his fifth-place finish with a leap of 47-6.5.

Colton Paller finished fourth in the discus with a personal best throw of 173-6, and he finished ahead of two throwers that were ranked above him entering the meet. He added five points to the Cowboys team point total.

On the track, the Cowboy relay teams both picked up points for the squad, as the foursome of Jace Marx, Jacob Harthun Tyler Dahl and Roman Smith finished the 4x100m relay in 42.13 seconds to place fifth. Additionally, the 4x400m relay team of Marx, Caige McComb, Dahl and Bryce Ailshie finished eighth in 3:19.70.

Ailshie also picked up points in the 800m run, as he finished fifth in 1:50.68. Also scoring from the track, McCade Johnson earned points in both the 110m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. In the shorter race, he finished eighth in 15.00, a personal best time. In the longer race, he finished in sixth with a time of 53.47, just ahead of teammate Brandon McGuire, who was seventh with a time of 54.16.

Michael Downey added a team point with an eighth place finish in the 5,000m, as he crossed the line in 14:17.30 in one of the top conference in the nation when it comes to distance races.

On the track for the Cowgirls, Solana Quistorff finished eighth in the 1,500m with a time of 4:34.32. Additionally, she ran on the 4x400m relay team with Henderson, Edmonds and Jasmyne Cooper that placed seventh with a time of 3:47.30.

The Pokes will await the selections for the NCAA West Preliminaries, and will take qualifiers to Sacramento, Calif., for the preliminary meet from Thursday through Saturday, May 23-25.
