Jerayah Davis’ Big Day Highlights the Conclusion of the Beach Invitational for Wyoming Track & Field

LONG BEACH, Calif./TORRANCE, Calif. (April 20, 2019) – Jerayah Davis set a pair of school records and one meet record during the final day of the Beach Invitational. The Kelly Walsh grad picked up a pair of event wins in the 100-meter dash and the long jump individually, before teaming up with Ja’la Henderson, Shayla Howell and Jordan Edmonds two win the 4x100m relay.

“Jerayah had one of the best days in school history as she shattered her records in the long jump and the 100 meters,” said Wyoming head track & field coach Bryan Berryhill. “She definitely put herself in the NCAA elite category with those two performances today.”

Davis started her day by placing first in the 100m dash with a time of 11.18. That time is a school record, topping the previous mark held by Davis at 11.41 seconds. The time is also a meet record dating back through the 25 years of the competition. Additionally, that time is fifth in the NCAA heading into the week. Davis’ 100m time is also fourth all-time in the Mountain West.

Then, Davis added nearly four inches onto her school record in the long jump, placing first with a mark of 21 feet, two-and-a-half inches. That mark is also fifth in the NCAA heading into the week, and she is one of just eight women in the country to clear 21 feet this season.

Davis, Henderson, Howell and Edmonds teamed up and won their second 4x100m relay title of the week, this time finishing in 45.50.

Outside of Davis’ outstanding day, the rest of the Pokes combined to record 12 personal bests and numerous high finishes throughout the Beach Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.

“Overall, the team competed very well, and we are leaving this competition a better team,” Berryhill said. “We competed with toughness and confidence, which led to an extraordinary amount of personal bests across all events.”

At the Beach Invitational, all four Cowgirls who ran the 1,500m race recorded PRs. Zia Macdermid finished seventh overall and second among collegians with a time of 4:32.50. That time is ninth all-time in Cowgirl history. Additionally, Solana Quistorff finished 11th in 4:35.14, Katelyn Mitchem placed 16th in 4:37.99 and Kacey Doner clocked in at 4:40.17 to finish 22nd.

Jasmyne Cooper was the lone Cowgirl to compete in the 800m run, and she finished 11th in 2:11.34.

In the field, Henderson was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump with a mark of 42-6, as she finished second overall. She has now cleared 42 feet in all five meets she’s competed in this season. Aumni Ashby had a personal-best jump of 39 feet, seven inches to finish 12th.

For the Cowboys, Bryce Ailshie finished seventh in the 800m run in 1:50.65, while McCade Johnson finished the 400m hurdles in 57.92 to place 39th.

In the field, Alec Richardson had a personal-best long jump of 23-7.25 to finish 15th, while Pete Mead’s high jump of 6-5 was good for 27th and just one inch off his personal best.

Colton Paller was the lone Cowboy thrower on the day, and he finished 31st in the discus with a throw of 168-5, and he placed 61st in the shot put with a mark of 47-6.25.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, Christopher Henry finished seventh in the Invitational heat of the 5,000m race, as his time of 14:09.10 is the No. 9 time in Cowboy history. Michael Downey placed ninth in 14:12.71, and Harry Ewing finished in 14:41.57. In the next heat of the 5,000m, Jerald Taylor finished 11th in 14:53.23. All four of those times are personal best.

The Wyoming track & field teams continue the outdoor season next weekend at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo.
