Pokes Take Eleventh at Wyoming Cowgirl Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz. (April 9, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team finished 11th at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Tuesday at Southern Dunes Golf Club.

“We are so very appreciative of the entire staff at Ak Chin Southern Dunes,” head coach Josey Stender said. “They have a championship facility and it means so much for our program to host there.”

The Cowgirls fired a final-round 304 to finish the event with a 42-over 54-hole 906 total score. UTEP took the team title with a 19-over 883. New Mexico State’s Suthavee Chanachai took the individual title with an 8-under 208.

“We really had to grind it out today as a team and just left a few out there,” Stender said. “We have put the work in and this team believes in themselves and each other, we just have to go out and perform now at our conference championship.”

The Cowgirls were led by junior Erin Sargent who finished her tournament with a 76 in the final round to tie for 23rd overall with an 8-over 224 (76-72-76). The finish marked Sargent’s fifth top-25 finish of the season.

Kaylee and Megan Knadler each turned in impressive tournaments, playing just outside of their hometown of Phoenix, Ariz., tying for 32nd.

Megan Knadler saved her best round of the week for last with a 1-over 73. The Cowgirl senior wrapped up the event at 9-over with a 54-hole total of 226 (77-76-73).

Kaylee Knadler followed up a nice first day of action with a 77 on Tuesday. Knadler posted a 226 (77-76-73) to post her highest individual finish of the season.

Redshirt sophomore Caitlyn Skavdahl finished in a tie for 69th with a 16-over 232 (80-74-78). Freshman Cowgirl Samantha Hui tied for 89th with a 22-over 238 (78-77-83).

Freshmen Cristiana Ciasca and Michelle Nguyen both competed as individuals this weekend. Ciasca tied for 72nd with a 17-over 233. Ciasca’s final-round 75 was her best round of the weekend, coming just a couple of strokes from her career low. Nguyen finished tied for 95th with a 26-over 242 (84-75-83).

The Cowgirls will be back in action next week when they head to Rancho Mirage, Calif., for the Mountain West Championships. The tournament is set for April 15-17.
