CORNVILLE, Ariz. (March 23, 2019) – The Wyoming Cowgirl golf team wrapped up first and second rounds of play on Saturday in seventh at the Red Rocks Invitational, held at the par-71, 5,919-yard Agave Highlands Golf Course.
“We had a very solid start round one but I was even more pleased with round two,” head coach Josey Stender said. “Conditions were tough in the afternoon and we were one of the few teams to improve. This course is set up to go low and I feel like we have the game to do it.”
Cowgirl junior Erin Sargent is the low Cowgirl through two rounds at the event, sitting in a tie for 13th overall at 1-over for the weekend. As a team, Wyoming turned in team rounds of 290 (+6) and 289 (+5) at the event to sit at 11-over for the event. Two Pokes recorded season lows on the day.
Gonzaga leads the field after 36 holes, sitting at 1-over. Montana State’s Delaney Elliott is the individual leader at 7-under following rounds of 67 and 68 on Saturday.
Sargent opened her day with a 1-under 70 in the first round of play. The Cowgirl junior dropped in six birdies in her first round and finished strong with five birdies to only one bogey over her last 12 holes. Sargent was on her way to another strong second round, but got snagged with some trouble at the par-3 13th to finish with a 1-over 72.
In her first round, Caitlyn Skavdahl turned in a new low score-to-par for her career, scoring a 1-over 72. Skavdahl had a nice outing in her second round as well, with a 73 that included an eagle on the par-5 seventh. After 18 holes, Skavdahl is tied for 22nd at 3-over.
Cowgirl freshman Samantha Hui is also in a tie for 22nd at 3-over with Skavdahl. Hui bounced back from a 4-over 75 over her first 18 holes with an impressive 1-under 70 for her second round that ties her career low-to-par. Hui finished her second round with five birdies to only one bogey over her final 13 holes.
Cowgirls Kaylee and Megan Knadler are both tied in 45th at 6-over after day one. Kaylee Knadler started her day off with a 4-over 75 before bouncing back with a 2-over 73. Megan Knadler fired a 73 in her first round before finishing up with a 75 in round two.
Wyoming has a trio of individuals competing in Arizona this weekend. Michelle Nguyen is tied for 51st overall at 8-over following scores of 74 and 76 on Saturday. Senior Sarah Hankins is tied for 74th at 12-over with a 75 and 79 in rounds one and two. Cristiana Ciasca is in a tie for 99th at 18-over.
The Cowgirls will tee off for the final round of the tournament on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. MT.
