LARAMIE, Wyo. (March 2, 2019) – The Wyoming tennis team had its first opportunity to play in front of the home crowd in Laramie on Saturday morning. The Cowgirls dominated in a 6-1 victory against the UTEP Miners. The victory improved Wyoming’s dual record to 7-5 on the season.
“I thought our team did a good job of coming back today and playing well,” head coach Dean Clower said. “It was a late night coming back after playing in Casper yesterday. We were professional about how we went about business today. We started off a lot stronger in doubles which is a bonus and in singles we are so tough from top to bottom. If we continue to bring this to the table every day we will have a lot of victories in front of us.
“Regarding tomorrow’s matches, I’m looking for the same type of performance as today. We have to come out with the same mentality, focus, structure and discipline as the UTEP match. If we do that we should be successful.”
UTEP dropped to 3-7 overall this season. With its win on Saturday morning, the Cowgirls tied up the all-time series record versus the Miners is at six. UW has won the last three contests.
In doubles, junior Ana Royo and freshman Maria Oreshkina started off the day with a 6-1 win over UTEP’s Rine Nazaki and Erandi Martinez in the No. 3 doubles. Wyoming seniors Elisa Koonik and Tessa van Der Ploeg won their second match in as many days with a 6-2 victory over Kirsten Prelle and Kathleen Percegona at the No. 1 spot. The freshman duo of Ida Krause and Mihaela Kaftanova were up 4-3 against Vanessa Valdez and Yvette van Oijen but the match was not completed.
Wyoming carried that momentum over in to singles by winning five of six matches. Cowgirl Oreshkina lost only two games in her 6-1, 6-1 win over Martinez at the No. 3 singles position. Koonik put UW up 3-0 with a two-set win, 6-0, 6-4 over UTEP’s Valdez, while Royo clinched the match for the Cowgirls with her defeat of Percegona, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot. It was a battle at the No. 1 singles spot, Wyoming’s van Der Ploeg rallied back to a victory over the Miners’ Prelle. UTEP won the opening set 6-3, but Wyoming responded to win the second 6-2 forcing a third set tiebreaker. After falling behind 5-4, van Der Ploeg responded by scoring the final six out of seven points to take the match 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). At No. 6 singles, UW’s Kaftanova defeated UTEP’s Milena Baigorria in two sets, 6-1, 6-3, while Fernandez lost a tough one in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
The Cowgirls will continue action at home tomorrow against the New Mexico State Aggies and Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. The first match is scheduled for 9 a.m. MT followed by a 2 p.m. start at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts.
