The Mountain West announced its 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete Award winners and the University of Wyoming Athletics had 76 student-athletes named to this year’s team. A league-record of 789 student-athletes were named to the team including 89 individuals who achieved a 4.00 or higher gpa over two or more terms, and 61 student-athletes who recognized in multiple sports. The previous league record of 756 was set in 2016-17.
Women’s track & field garnered the most awards for UW with 20 MW Scholar-Athletes. The breakdown by sport for the remainder of Wyoming’s 2017-18 MW Scholar-Athletes includes 14 in women’s swimming & diving; eight in women’s soccer, seven from volleyball; six in women’s basketball and men’s track & field; five from women’s tennis; four in women’s golf; three in football; two in men’s basketball and one in men’s golf.
The sophomore class led the way with 22 honorees. Additionally, there were 19 seniors, 18 juniors and 17 freshmen who earned the honor this year.
The MW Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West-sponsored sport.
