The green waste pile at the Laramie Landfill remains in a smoldering state. Crews are using heavy equipment to continue work on the perimeter of the pile as conditions allow. The green waste material and fire is confined at this time and no other waste materials are involved in the incident.
Deep seated fires, such as this, are very difficult to extinguish due to the immense volume of organic material involved, as well as the inability for water to easily penetrate to the core of the burning material.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is still under investigation. The landfill is open and operating during its normal schedule: Monday – Saturday at 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; closed Sundays and holidays.
