The University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team returns to the UniWyo Sports Complex this week opening a Mountain West homestand that features four matches in seven days. The Cowgirls play host to San Diego State on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT. Wyoming then welcomes UNLV for a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. MT.
The Cowgirls opened the conference schedule last weekend with losses to Boise State and Utah State. Wyoming fell in four sets to the Broncos last Thursday in Boise, Idaho. UW finished the opening weekend of MW play with a heartbreaking five-set loss to Utah State in Logan, Utah.
Senior Erin Kirby added another record to her collection, becoming the MW’s all-time leader in blocking assists. She has 598 blocking assists in her career at Wyoming. She has collected 641 total blocks in her career with the Cowgirls and is only 30 blocks away from being the conference’s all-time leader in the category.
The Cowgirl offense has continued to be very efficient leading the MW and ranking fourth in the nation in hitting percentage at .299 (756-242-1720). Junior Bridget Shanahan leads the Cowgirls and the MW in kills per set at 3.78 with 208 kills on the season.
About SDSU: The Aztecs come into the week with a 5-6 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Mountain West play. SDSU defeated Fresno State in four sets (25-20,25-17,22-25,25-23) in the Aztecs’ MW opener. San Diego State ranks 10th in the MW in hitting percentage at .164 (488-257-1411). SDSU averages 12.20 kills per set, ranking seventh in the MW. San Diego State ranks ninth in the MW in assists per set at 10.93. The Aztecs are solid defensively ranking third in the MW in digs at 14.77 per frame. SDSU ranks seventh in the league in blocks at 2.11 per set. Ciara Brown ranks 14th in the MW in kills at 2.82 per set, as she has recorded 93 kills on the season. Kaja Sandberg leads the Aztecs in hitting percentage at .296 (76-23-179). Devyn Pritchard leads SDSU in digs averaging 3.26 per frame, as she ranks 10th in the MW. Sandberg leads the Aztecs ranking 11th in the league in blocks at 1.05 per frame.
About UNLV: The Rebels come into the weekend with an impressive 13-3 overall mark and a 1-0 record in the MW. UNLV swept Fresno State (25-11,25-18,25-17) in the conference opener. The Rebels rank fourth in the MW in hitting percentage at .259 (705-229-1835). UNLV ranks fifth in the MW in kills at 13.06 per set. The Rebels also rank fifth in assists at 12.04 per frame. Defensively, the Rebels lead the MW in digs averaging an impressive 14.98 per set. UNLV also leads the league and ranks fourth in the nation in blocks at 3.16 per stanza. Katlin Winters leads the Rebels and ranks sixth in the MW in hitting percentage at .367 (94-13-221). Alyssa Wing leads UNLV in kills at 2.79 per set ranking 15th in the MW. Allison Davies leads the league in digs averaging 4.57 per set. Bree Hamel leads UNLV in blocks per set at 1.57, as she ranks third in the MW.
